Amarnath means Shiva, is in the form of a lingam, formed naturally made of an ice - stalagmite One of the holy trinity, Shiva is a living god. Amarnath is one of the most famous and holiest of Hindu temples, dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in Kashmir, India. The temple is reported to be around 5000 years old. Amarnath cave is situated at 14000 feets above sea level. It is said that Lord Shiva recounted to Goddess Parvati the secret of creation in a cave in Amarnath. Unknown to them, a pair of doves eavesdropped on this conversation and having learnt the secret, are reborn again and again, and have made the cave their eternal abode. The state government of Jammu & Kashmir organizes the annual Yatra to the Holy Amarnath Cave during the month of July and August every year. The intending pilgrims are allowed to perform "Darshan" from Shard Purnimashi to Shravan Purnimashi, which course spreads over a month or so.
